Asaph
Asaph Flute and Piano (2015)
“Asaph” utilizes a variety of extended techniques including beatboxing in the flute, which emulates the raw and rowdy character of the titular Afghani immigrant whom I worked with in Nashville. Asaph’s longing and desire to assimilate into the American culture is represented by pitch bends in the flute melody that bookends “Asaph.” A previous version for violin was used at the University of South Carolina to accompany a dance performance, The piece has also been performed at the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival in Memphis Tennessee, and at the Belmont University Graduate Performance Concert.
